Getting Your Patient Started on DAWNZERA

Once you have decided to prescribe DAWNZERA for your appropriate patient, follow these key steps to get your patient started.

Step 1:

Prescribe DAWNZERA and enroll patients in Ionis Every StepTM

Complete all required sections, including signatures, of the DAWNZERA Patient Enrollment and Prescription Form.

Diagnosis and attack characteristics (eg, baseline and current frequency, severity, location, duration)

Copies of relevant lab results (eg, baseline and current C1-INH antigenic/functional and C4 levels; and, if required by the insurance plan to support diagnosis, genetic testing results)

Experience with current and/or previous treatments (include both prophylactic and acute treatments)

If possible, photos of a patient’s HAE swells

Step 2:

Navigate patient health plan coverage

Ionis Every Step will check patient’s benefits, confirm insurance plan criteria, and determine the correct form to use for the specific insurance plan.

Exceptions and Prior Authorization (PA)

Send outstanding documentation to Ionis Every Step for the exception/PA submission package

Submit exception/prior authorization submission package to insurance plan

Once coverage is approved, remind patients to answer calls from the specialty pharmacy to confirm shipment of DAWNZERA

- Let patients know that the specialty pharmacy will call from 1-844-444-4305

Appeals (as needed)

Review the communication from the health plan to understand the denial reason(s) and draft a Letter of Appeal

Frequently asked questions about getting your patients started on DAWNZERA

DAWNZERA can be prescribed through your EHR or through the DAWNZERA Direct online companion. Reach out to your Account Specialist to gain access to DAWNZERA Direct.

DAWNZERA is expected to be covered under the pharmacy benefit; and similar to other treatments for rare disease, patients may need to meet coverage criteria to receive approval from their insurance plan. Ionis Every Step™ will confirm your patient’s benefits for DAWNZERA and the criteria required by the insurance plan to request coverage.

Providing all documentation required by the insurance plan to Ionis Every Step early in the process may help avoid unnecessary delays. Ionis Every Step will communicate the required forms and documentation to your office and proactively reach out if more information is needed. Once you have collected the required information, you can typically submit to the plan using 1 of 2 methods:

  1. Electronically: If this option is available, Ionis Every Step can provide a link to submit
  2. Verbally: Your office may need to call the insurance plan and verbally request coverage
    • Have all documents from the submission package on hand to refer to during the call
    • Take detailed notes during the call (eg, representative’s name, confirmation number, next steps)
    • Keep in mind that you may need to send documentation to the insurance plan via fax

After receiving a denial, your office can initiate the appeals process to request that the insurance plan overturn this decision. The steps below can help you get started:

  • Review the communication from the insurance plan to understand the reason for denial and the plan’s specific next steps
  • Learn more about why the coverage request was denied by scheduling a peer-to-peer review with the insurance plan
    • Depending on the insurance plan, this conversation may be sufficient to overturn the denial
    • This request is time sensitive, so be sure to schedule the review as soon as possible
  • Draft a Letter of Appeal to provide additional rationale for your treatment decision and include relevant documentation

The Ionis Every Step Specialty Pharmacy will call them to set up delivery of DAWNZERA. DAWNZERA will not be shipped until your patient speaks with the pharmacy about potential cost and to setup delivery.
